New on SI: Coors Field Fan Yells N-Word During Lewis Brinson At-Bat

In the middle of Brinson's at-bat in the ninth inning of the Rockies-Marlins game, a fan could be heard on the broadcast shouting the N-word twice.

Sunday's game between the Marlins and Rockies at Coors Field featured an ugly moment when a fan yell the N-word while Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson batted in the ninth inning.

The fan's shouting was picked up by microphones on the field and could be heard on the Bally Sports broadcast. The fan yelled in between pitches to Brinson, who is Black.

After the game, Marlins broadcaster Paul Severino denounced the incident in a statement via Twitter, calling the incident "awful."

The Rockies later released a statement saying the person who shouted the slur has not yet been identified, though the team is still investigating the incident.

“The Colorado Rockies are disgusted at the racial slur by a fan directed at the Marlins’ Lewis Brinson during the ninth inning of today’s game. Although the subject was not identified prior to the end fo the game, the Rockies are still investigating this incident,” the statement read. “The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be ejected and banned from Coors Field.”

MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark released a statement Sunday evening, emphasizing that racism will not be tolerated "on or off the field."

“It is a painful reality that progress continues to be elusive in a world where ignorance and bigotry remain all too commonplace,” Clark’s statement read. “While many are truly committed to respect and equality for all, the abhorrent racial animus displayed today highlights that there is still much work to be done. We have to continue to work together to ensure that racism is never tolerated on or off the field.”

The Rockies won the game, 13-8, while Brinson went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
